Preschool Activity- Number Caterpillar

This activity is geared to help your child recognize their numbers and numerical order.

To prepare for this activity:
  • cut out 6 circles
  • either you or your child draw a face on one of the circles
  • write 1-5 on the remaining five circles
  • (optional) you can cut small pieces of string or pipe cleaners for legs and antennas

Assist your child in arranging and gluing down the circles in the appropriate order. Then add legs and antennas (as you see my son was not a fan of antennas). And voila! You have a number caterpillar.

Preschool activity- Molding Crayons

To mold crayons you will need crayons, X-Acto knife, a silicone mold, hammer, cookie sheet, and a bag.

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees

Step 2
Peel paper off the crayons- using a X-Acto knife, run the blade along the crayon and peel off the paper.

Step 3
Break up the crayons- place crayons into a bag. Use a hammer to gently break up the crayons into pieces that measure about half inch.

Step 4
Fill molds- place broken crayons into the silicone molds. Be sure to overfill the molds.

Step 5
Place in oven- Place your silicone mold on a cookie sheet and place in the over for 10-15 minutes until the crayons are melted. *Note- I have had better experience with Crayola crayons. The generic crayons work just as well however it may take longer to melt.

Step 6
Remove and cool- When crayons are completely melted, carefully remove the cookie tray from the oven. Set aside to let the cool. As the crayons cool, they will harden in the mold. To expedite the process you can place the mold in the freezer for about 45-60 minutes.

Step 7
Remove crayons from mold- You can gently pull and stretch the mold to loosen the crayon. Then flip the bottom out to release the crayon

Featured Shop- Nature Junkie

Nature Junkie
Nature Junkie is a handmade store that makes quality eco-friendly products ran by Kristin, a woman of many hats herself. This set here I ordered as Christmas gifts. The rooster set went to my mother-in-law, the unsponges to my boys for bath time, and the other hanging towel for me! My shopping experience was exceptional. I was able to go through her available fabric and pick out the prints that I wanted and she was more than accommodating. Kristin strives for excellence, and let me tell you, excellence is what you get in both quality of product and customer service.

Preschool Activity- Color Sorting!

Color sorting is great way to work on color recognition as well as a great math activity.

Using construction paper and blue painters tape, I set up columns for each color. My children then sorted the toys into the appropriate color column. Once they were done, my 4 year old counted how many items were in each row and helped me graph them accordingly. They all had a blast!

Recipe- French Dip Sandwich

Ingredients:

3.5 pound beef roast
24 ounces of beef broth
*I prefer to make my own with 24oz water
       and 4 beef bouillon cubes.
1 can (10.5 oz) condensed french onion soup
4 oz red wine
*I tend to use a Shiraz
1 tablespoon of Montreal Steak seasoning
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
Salt and Pepper to taste
french rolls
Optional- your choice of cheese. I use cheddar
but most people prefer provolone.

Directions:
  • Trim off excess fat from beef roast and season meat all over with salt and pepper. Pour beef broth, condensed french onion soup, red wine, Montreal seasoning, onion powder, into your slow cooker. Place your beef roast into the liquid. Cook on low for 6-7 hours.
  • Remove roast and let it rest, covered in aluminum foil, about 15 minutes.
  • Slice the beef roast into thin slices and return to your slow cooker on low for an additional 30 minutes.
  • Slice and sauté onions.
  • Lightly toast french rolls.
  • Divide beef onto the rolls. Evenly distribute cheese and onions on top of the meat. *the cheese should lightly melt. But you may need to place sandwich under the broiler briefly to melt the cheese.
  • Serve with a small bowl of au jus.

The Dreaded Potty Training

Let's talk potty training. I am in the process of training Brodie, my 2nd little man. Now, this is not my first rodeo but each personality presents different obstacles while potty training. With both children, I had tried potty charts, stickers, a treasure box, etc. Nothing was convincing them to use the potty. They have toys, books, and we do art often. These "prizes" were not striking their interest. However, I have found a method that has worked with both children...
BRIBERY!
I came up with "Pennies for PeePee". We have a potty bank that sits on top of the toilet. Every time Brodie uses the potty, he gets to put a penny in his potty bank; 1 penny for peepee and 3 pennies for poopoo. The results have been fantastic with both of my boys and it is cheaper than buying toys! When potty training is complete and we are ready to break free from the potty bank, we will take Brodie to the store with his pennies (and likely some help from us) to pick out a toy to buy to celebrate his victory.

What potty training method has worked for you?
